The Iatmul, commonly referred to as The Sepik, are a tribal people that reside along the middle Sepik River in Papua New Guinea. They are well known for their art and rituals, but also for their overmodeled ancestor skulls. These skulls belonged to their ancestors and are typically covered in clay, through which a face is newly modeled and decorated using the same patterns that the deceased relative had also worn during ceremonies when he was alive. It is common for these skulls to be decorated with clay, wood, shells, fiber, hair, and paint. This Iatmul ancestor skull is in amazing condition. This extraordinary specimen would make a fine addition to any collection.
