The Ifugao are an indigenous tribe that resides in the Cordilleras mountain region of the Philippines. They are well-known for their headhunted trophy skulls, which are mounted on a wooden board alongside the skull of an animal sacrifice (usually that of a wild boar). These trophies brought status and respect to the individual who took them, and were used during ceremonies as they were considered to be spiritually powerful items.
This Ifugao trophy skull is in excellent condition, and is mounted on a wooden board alongside two sacrificial skulls. There are rattan lashings which secure the skulls to the board, as well as a rattan hanger/handle that sticks out from the back of the piece. This fascinating specimen would make a captivating addition to any collection.
