World War I marked a transitional period in the evolution of armed conflict. Historically, cavalry units have long been considered an essential offensive element; however, horses proved too vulnerable to modern machine guns and artillery fire as The Great War raged on. The beginning of the war saw all of the major combatants utilizing cavalry forces. As the war progressed, it was clear that these forces were no longer effective, and were quickly removed from service as a result.
These original U.S. World War I leather cavalry leggings have clearly seen combat during the first portion of the war. Each legging has two buckles and two straps. These leggings are in excellent overall condition with an expected amount of wear consistent with their age.
